Hanna-Barbera Productions, Inc. was an American animation studio that dominated American television animation for nearly three decades in the mid-20th century. The company was founded in 1957 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, who had previously worked at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) where they created the popular Tom and Jerry series.

History[edit | edit source]

Hanna-Barbera was established after MGM's animation studio closed in 1957. The duo's first major success was The Huckleberry Hound Show, which introduced the character Yogi Bear. This was followed by The Flintstones in 1960, the first prime-time animated television series, which became a massive hit and remains one of the studio's most iconic creations.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Hanna-Barbera produced a string of successful animated series, including The Jetsons, Jonny Quest, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, and The Smurfs. The studio was known for its limited animation techniques, which allowed it to produce high-quality content on a lower budget.

Techniques and Innovations[edit | edit source]

Hanna-Barbera was a pioneer in the use of limited animation, a technique that economized on animation production by reusing backgrounds, character movements, and other elements. This allowed the studio to produce a large volume of content quickly and cost-effectively. The studio also made extensive use of voice acting and sound effects to enhance its animated series.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Hanna-Barbera's influence on the animation industry is profound. Many of its characters and series have become cultural icons, and the studio's techniques have been widely adopted in the industry. In 1991, the studio was acquired by Turner Broadcasting System, which later merged with Time Warner. The Hanna-Barbera library is now managed by Warner Bros. Animation.
