Helichrysum stoechas
Helichrysum stoechas, commonly known as the Eternal Flower or Immortelle, is a species of flowering plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region, where it thrives in dry, sandy, and rocky habitats. This perennial herb is well-regarded for its vibrant, golden-yellow flowers and its ability to retain color and shape long after being picked, hence the name "Immortelle."
Description[edit | edit source]
Helichrysum stoechas features narrow, silver-green leaves and produces clusters of small, bright yellow flowers in the summer. The flowers are notable for their papery texture, which contributes to their longevity when dried. The plant typically reaches heights of 30-60 cm and spreads outwards, forming dense clumps that are often used in gardens as ground cover or in rockeries.
Cultivation and Uses[edit | edit source]
In cultivation, Helichrysum stoechas prefers well-drained soil and full sun exposure. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it a popular choice for xeriscaping and Mediterranean-style gardens. Beyond its ornamental value, the plant has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly for its anti-inflammatory and healing properties. The essential oil derived from Helichrysum stoechas is used in aromatherapy and natural skincare products for its purported benefits in healing scars, wounds, and reducing inflammation.
Ecology[edit | edit source]
Helichrysum stoechas plays a role in its native ecosystem by providing nectar for pollinators. Its ability to thrive in poor soils also makes it valuable for soil stabilization and habitat restoration projects.
Conservation[edit | edit source]
While Helichrysum stoechas is not currently listed as endangered, its habitat is threatened by urbanization, agricultural expansion, and climate change. Conservation efforts are focused on habitat preservation and sustainable harvesting practices, especially for commercial uses.
