Helmut Kentler

Helmut Kentler (1928–2008) was a German psychologist and sexologist known for his controversial involvement in placing homeless children with pedophile men, a practice he argued was meant to provide these children with care and social integration. This practice took place primarily in Berlin during the 1970s and has since been the subject of significant criticism and legal scrutiny.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Helmut Kentler was born in Cologne, Germany, in 1928. Details about his early life and education are sparse, but he went on to study psychology, eventually becoming a prominent figure in the field of sexology. Kentler's work was influenced by the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s, a period during which societal norms around sexuality were being challenged and redefined.

Career[edit | edit source]

Throughout his career, Kentler was a vocal advocate for the liberalization of sexual mores, including the decriminalization of homosexuality. He held positions in various academic and research institutions, where he conducted studies on sexuality and advocated for his views on sexual education and rights.

One of Kentler's most controversial actions was his involvement in an experiment in West Berlin, where he facilitated the placement of homeless children into the care of pedophile men. Kentler argued that these placements were beneficial for the children, providing them with a loving and caring environment. This practice was supported by certain government officials at the time, who allowed it to continue for years.

Controversy and Legacy[edit | edit source]

The "Kentler Project," as it later came to be known, has been the subject of intense criticism and legal investigation. Critics argue that Kentler abused his authority and trust, placing vulnerable children in situations where they were exposed to abuse and exploitation. The Berlin Senate commissioned a report in 2016 to investigate the extent and impact of Kentler's project, which confirmed the placement of several children with known pedophiles and highlighted the failure of the child welfare system to protect these children.

Kentler's work and the scandal surrounding the project have sparked a broader debate on the ethics of child welfare practices and the responsibility of researchers and government officials to protect vulnerable populations. Despite his contributions to sexology and sexual education, Kentler's legacy is overshadowed by the controversy of his actions, raising questions about the balance between progressive social policies and the protection of children.

Death[edit | edit source]

Helmut Kentler passed away in 2008. At the time of his death, the full extent of the controversy surrounding his actions was not yet widely known. In the years following his death, as investigations shed light on his practices, his work has been re-evaluated, leading to widespread condemnation.
