Hemingway special
Hemingway Special is a popular cocktail that is named after the renowned American author, Ernest Hemingway. The drink is a variation of the classic Papa Doble or Hemingway Daiquiri, which was a favorite of the author during his time in Havana, Cuba.
History[edit | edit source]
The Hemingway Special was created at the famous El Floridita bar in Havana, where Hemingway was a regular patron. The original Papa Doble was a mix of rum, lime juice, grapefruit juice, and maraschino liqueur. The Hemingway Special is a slightly sweeter version of this cocktail, with the addition of simple syrup.
Preparation[edit | edit source]
The Hemingway Special is typically made with the following ingredients:
- 2 oz white rum
- 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
- 1/2 oz maraschino liqueur
- 1/2 oz simple syrup
All ingredients are combined in a shaker with ice, shaken until well chilled, and then strained into a chilled cocktail glass.
Variations[edit | edit source]
There are several variations of the Hemingway Special, including the Hemingway Daiquiri, which omits the simple syrup, and the Hemingway Cooler, which adds soda water for a longer, more refreshing drink.
In popular culture[edit | edit source]
The Hemingway Special, like many aspects of Ernest Hemingway's life, has been referenced in various forms of media, including literature, film, and television. It is often associated with the image of Hemingway as a hard-drinking, adventurous writer.
