Henriette Bùi Quang Chiêu (1906–2012) was a pioneering Vietnamese physician and the first female medical doctor in Vietnam. Her contributions to medicine and education have left a lasting impact on the healthcare system in Vietnam.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Henriette Bùi Quang Chiêu was born in 1906 in Saigon, French Indochina. She was the daughter of Bùi Quang Chiêu, a prominent politician and journalist. Her family background provided her with a strong foundation in education and public service.

In 1925, Henriette moved to France to pursue her medical studies at the University of Paris. She was one of the few women, and the first Vietnamese woman, to attend medical school in France at that time. Henriette graduated in 1934, earning her medical degree and becoming the first Vietnamese woman to do so.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Upon returning to Vietnam, Henriette Bùi Quang Chiêu began her medical career at the Chợ Rẫy Hospital in Saigon. She specialized in obstetrics and gynecology, areas in which she made significant contributions. Her work was instrumental in improving maternal and child healthcare in Vietnam.

Henriette was known for her dedication to her patients and her efforts to provide medical care to underserved communities. She was also involved in training and mentoring young medical professionals, particularly women, encouraging them to pursue careers in medicine.
