Henry G. Davis

Henry Gassaway Davis (November 16, 1823 – March 11, 1916) was an American politician and businessman from West Virginia. He served as a United States Senator from West Virginia from 1871 to 1883 and was the Democratic nominee for Vice President of the United States in the 1904 presidential election.

Early Life and Education

Henry G. Davis was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and moved to Piedmont, West Virginia, at a young age. Details about his early education are sparse, but he is known to have been self-educated in many areas.

Business Career

Before entering politics, Davis made a fortune in the railroad industry, which was rapidly expanding during the mid-19th century. He was involved in the development of several railroads in the Appalachian Mountains, which helped facilitate coal and timber extraction from the region.

Political Career

Davis's political career began in the West Virginia House of Delegates, where he served before being elected to the United States Senate in 1871. As a Senator, Davis was known for his advocacy on behalf of the railroad industry and economic development in West Virginia. His legislative efforts were often focused on improving the infrastructure and economic conditions of the Appalachian region.

In 1904, Davis was selected as the running mate of Alton B. Parker in the presidential election. The Parker-Davis ticket was ultimately unsuccessful, losing to Theodore Roosevelt and Charles W. Fairbanks.

Later Life and Legacy

After his political career, Davis continued to be involved in business and philanthropy. He died in Washington, D.C., in 1916 and is remembered as a key figure in the development of West Virginia's industry and infrastructure.
