Charles Warren Fairbanks (May 11, 1852 – June 4, 1918) was an American politician who served as the 26th Vice President of the United States from 1905 to 1909. He was a member of the Republican Party and a prominent figure in the political landscape of the early 20th century.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Fairbanks was born in a log cabin near Unionville Center, Ohio. He was the son of Loriston Monroe Fairbanks, a wagon-maker, and Mary Adelaide Smith. He attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where he graduated in 1872. After graduation, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1874.

Legal and Political Career[edit | edit source]

Fairbanks began his legal career in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he quickly became a successful lawyer. He gained prominence in the Republican Party and was elected to the United States Senate in 1897, serving until 1905. During his time in the Senate, he was known for his work on the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds and the Committee on Immigration.

Vice Presidency[edit | edit source]

In 1904, Fairbanks was selected as the running mate for Theodore Roosevelt in the presidential election. The Roosevelt-Fairbanks ticket won by a landslide, and Fairbanks served as Vice President from 1905 to 1909. During his tenure, he was known for his conservative views and his opposition to some of Roosevelt's progressive policies.

Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]

After his term as Vice President, Fairbanks returned to his law practice in Indianapolis. He remained active in politics and was a candidate for the Republican nomination for President in 1916, but he lost to Charles Evans Hughes. Fairbanks passed away on June 4, 1918, in Indianapolis.

Fairbanks is remembered for his contributions to American politics and his role in the Roosevelt administration. The city of Fairbanks, Alaska is named in his honor.
