Henry Jarvis Raymond
Henry Jarvis Raymond (January 24, 1820 – June 18, 1869) was an American journalist and politician. He was the co-founder of The New York Times and served as its first editor. Raymond was also a prominent member of the Republican Party and played a significant role in the political landscape of the United States during the mid-19th century.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Henry Jarvis Raymond was born in Lima, New York. He attended Genesee Wesleyan Seminary and later graduated from the University of Vermont in 1840. During his time at university, Raymond developed a keen interest in journalism and politics.
Journalism Career[edit | edit source]
After graduating, Raymond moved to New York City and began working for various newspapers. In 1851, he co-founded The New York Times with George Jones. Under Raymond's leadership, The New York Times quickly gained a reputation for its comprehensive news coverage and editorial integrity.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Raymond was an active member of the Whig Party before joining the Republican Party upon its formation. He served as a member of the New York State Assembly and was elected as the Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1855 to 1856. Raymond was also a delegate to the Republican National Convention and played a crucial role in the nomination of Abraham Lincoln for the presidency in 1860.

Henry Jarvis Raymond's contributions to journalism and politics have left a lasting impact. The New York Times remains one of the most influential newspapers in the world. Raymond's work in the political arena helped shape the early policies of the Republican Party and supported the Union during the American Civil War.
Death[edit | edit source]
Raymond died on June 18, 1869, in New York City. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.
