William A. Wheeler
William Almon Wheeler (June 30, 1819 – June 4, 1887) was an American politician and the 19th Vice President of the United States, serving from 1877 to 1881. He was a member of the Republican Party and served under President Rutherford B. Hayes.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
William A. Wheeler was born in Malone, New York. He attended the University of Vermont but did not graduate. Instead, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1845, beginning his practice in Malone.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Wheeler's political career began in the New York State Assembly, where he served from 1850 to 1851. He then served in the New York State Senate from 1858 to 1860. Wheeler was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1860, serving from 1861 to 1863 and again from 1869 to 1877.
Vice Presidency[edit | edit source]
In 1876, Wheeler was nominated for Vice President on the Republican ticket with Rutherford B. Hayes. The Hayes-Wheeler ticket won the contentious United States presidential election of 1876, which was decided by the Electoral Commission. Wheeler served as Vice President from March 4, 1877, to March 4, 1881. During his tenure, he was known for his integrity and support of civil service reform.
Later Life and Death[edit | edit source]
After his term as Vice President, Wheeler retired from public life and returned to Malone, New York. He died on June 4, 1887, and was buried in Morningside Cemetery in Malone.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Wheeler's legacy is often overshadowed by the more prominent figures of his time, but he is remembered for his dedication to public service and his role in the disputed 1876 election.
