Kevin McCarthy
Kevin McCarthy is an American politician serving as the House Minority Leader in the United States House of Representatives. He has been a member of the Republican Party and represents California's 23rd congressional district.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Kevin Owen McCarthy was born on January 26, 1965, in Bakersfield, California. He attended California State University, Bakersfield, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing in 1989 and a Master of Business Administration in 1994.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
California State Assembly[edit | edit source]
McCarthy began his political career as a member of the California State Assembly, where he served from 2002 to 2006. During his tenure, he was the California State Assembly Republican Leader from 2004 to 2006.
U.S. House of Representatives[edit | edit source]
McCarthy was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2006. He has been re-elected multiple times and has held various leadership positions within the Republican Party.
House Majority Whip[edit | edit source]
From 2011 to 2014, McCarthy served as the House Majority Whip, the third-highest position in the House Republican leadership.
House Majority Leader[edit | edit source]
In 2014, McCarthy was elected as the House Majority Leader, succeeding Eric Cantor. He served in this role until 2019.
House Minority Leader[edit | edit source]
Following the 2018 midterm elections, McCarthy was elected as the House Minority Leader, a position he currently holds.

McCarthy is known for his conservative stance on various issues, including tax policy, healthcare, and immigration. He has been a strong supporter of Donald Trump and has played a significant role in shaping the Republican agenda in the House.
