James S. Sherman
James Schoolcraft Sherman (October 24, 1855 – October 30, 1912) was an American politician who served as the 27th Vice President of the United States from 1909 until his death in 1912. He was a member of the Republican Party and is notable for being the first vice president to fly in a plane and the first to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a baseball game.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
James S. Sherman was born in Utica, New York, to Richard Updike Sherman and Mary Frances Sherman. He attended Whitestown Seminary and later graduated from Hamilton College in 1878.
Political Career[edit | edit source]
Sherman began his political career as the mayor of Utica in 1884. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1886, representing New York's 23rd congressional district. He served in the House from 1887 to 1891 and again from 1893 to 1909. During his time in Congress, Sherman was known for his work on the House Committee on Indian Affairs and his support for the McKinley Tariff.
Vice Presidency[edit | edit source]
In 1908, Sherman was selected as the vice-presidential running mate for William Howard Taft. The Taft-Sherman ticket won the election, and Sherman was inaugurated as vice president on March 4, 1909. As vice president, Sherman was known for his affable personality and his ability to mediate between different factions within the Republican Party.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Sherman married Carrie Babcock in 1881, and they had three sons. He was a member of several fraternal organizations, including the Freemasons and the Elks. Sherman was also an active member of the Dutch Reformed Church.
Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]
James S. Sherman died in office on October 30, 1912, just days before the 1912 presidential election. He was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Utica. Sherman is remembered for his contributions to the Republican Party and his role in early 20th-century American politics.
