Herbert Brownell Jr.
Herbert Brownell Jr. (February 20, 1904 – May 1, 1996) was an American lawyer and politician who served as the United States Attorney General from 1953 to 1957 under President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Brownell was born in Peru, Nebraska, and attended University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he earned his undergraduate degree. He later attended Yale Law School, graduating in 1927.
Career[edit | edit source]
Brownell began his career in law in New York City, where he joined the law firm of Lord, Day & Lord. He became involved in Republican Party politics and played a significant role in Thomas E. Dewey's gubernatorial and presidential campaigns.
United States Attorney General[edit | edit source]
As United States Attorney General, Brownell was instrumental in the Civil Rights Movement and played a key role in the desegregation of schools following the landmark Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education.
Later Life[edit | edit source]
After leaving the position of Attorney General, Brownell returned to private practice and continued to be active in public affairs. He passed away in New York City in 1996.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Brownell is remembered for his contributions to civil rights and his efforts to enforce the Supreme Court's desegregation rulings.
