Al Gore is an American politician and environmentalist who served as the 45th Vice President of the United States from 1993 to 2001 under President Bill Clinton. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was the party's nominee for President of the United States in the 2000 election.

Early life and education[edit | edit source]

Gore was born on March 31, 1948, in Washington, D.C.. He is the son of Pauline (LaFon) Gore, one of the first women to graduate from Vanderbilt University Law School, and Albert Gore Sr., a U.S. Representative who later served for 18 years as a U.S. Senator from Tennessee. Gore received a degree in government with honors from Harvard University in 1969.

Political career[edit | edit source]

Gore began his political career as a U.S. Representative from Tennessee's 4th district from 1977 to 1985. He then served as a U.S. Senator from Tennessee from 1985 to 1993. In 1992, he was selected as Bill Clinton's running mate and served as Vice President from 1993 to 2001. In the 2000 presidential election, Gore won the popular vote but lost the electoral college to George W. Bush in a controversial election that was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court of the United States.

Environmental activism[edit | edit source]

After his political career, Gore became a prominent environmental activist. He has written several books on the subject, including An Inconvenient Truth, which was later made into a documentary film of the same name. Gore's work in climate change activism earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, which he shared with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

Personal life[edit | edit source]

Gore has been married to Mary Elizabeth "Tipper" Gore since 1970. They have four children: Karenna, Kristin, Sarah, and Albert III.
