Variety of grape

Heroldrebe is a red wine grape variety that was developed in Germany in the mid-20th century. It is primarily grown in the Rheinhessen and Pfalz regions. The grape is known for producing wines with a deep color and a fruity character.

History[edit | edit source]

Heroldrebe was created in 1929 by the German viticulturist August Herold at the Weinsberg research institute. It is a cross between the Blauer Portugieser and Lemberger (also known as Blaufränkisch) grape varieties. The grape was named in honor of its creator, August Herold.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Heroldrebe is a relatively hardy grape variety that is well-suited to the climate of southern Germany. It is known for its resistance to common vine diseases, which makes it a popular choice among growers in the region. The grape tends to ripen early, which helps it avoid some of the challenges posed by the cooler climate.

Wine characteristics[edit | edit source]

Wines made from Heroldrebe grapes are typically deep red in color and exhibit a fruity aroma with notes of berries and cherries. The wines are often described as having a soft, velvety texture with moderate acidity. Heroldrebe wines are usually consumed young and are rarely aged for long periods.

Synonyms[edit | edit source]

Heroldrebe is sometimes referred to by its breeding code, We S 130. However, it is most commonly known by its name honoring August Herold.
