Hialeah is a city located in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. With a population of 233,339 as of the 2020 census, it is the sixth-largest city in Florida. Hialeah is part of the Miami metropolitan area, the second-largest metropolitan area in the Southeastern United States.

Hialeah was incorporated in 1925. The city's name is most commonly attributed to Muskogee origin, "Haiyakpo" (prairie) and "hili" (pretty) combining in "Hialeah" to mean "pretty prairie". The city is located upon a large prairie between Biscayne Bay and the Everglades.

Geography[edit | edit source]

Hialeah is located at 25.8576° N, 80.2785° W. The city is in the Miami-Dade County, and it is the only place in the county that has its own street grid numbered separately from the rest of the county.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Hialeah is a major center in the Miami metropolitan area's economy. The city's economy is primarily based on retail trade, healthcare, education, and social services. The city is home to a large number of small businesses, particularly in the areas of retail and personal services.

Demographics[edit | edit source]

As of the 2020 census, Hialeah had a population of 233,339. The racial makeup of the city was 92.6% Hispanic or Latino, 1.3% White (non-Hispanic), 2.7% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 2.9% from two or more races.

Education[edit | edit source]

Hialeah is served by Miami-Dade County Public Schools. The city is home to several elementary, middle, and high schools. Hialeah also hosts Miami Dade College's Hialeah Campus.

Transportation[edit | edit source]

Hialeah is served by the Miami Metrorail at Okeechobee, Hialeah, and Tri-Rail/Metrorail Transfer stations. The Okeechobee and Hialeah stations serve primarily as park-and-ride commuter stations to commuters and residents going into Downtown Miami, and Tri-Rail station to Miami International Airport and north to West Palm Beach.

Several notable individuals hail from Hialeah, including actor Cesar Romero, baseball player Gio Gonzalez, and rapper Rick Ross.
