Hilar lymph node

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hilar lymph nodes are a group of lymph nodes located in the hilum of an organ. They are part of the lymphatic system, which plays a crucial role in the body's immune response. The hilar lymph nodes are particularly associated with the lungs, where they are involved in filtering lymphatic fluid from the lung tissue.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The hilar lymph nodes are located at the hilum of each lung, an area where the bronchi, blood vessels, and nerves enter and exit the lung. They are part of the mediastinal lymph nodes, which also include the paratracheal, subcarinal, and paraesophageal lymph nodes.

Function[edit | edit source]

The primary function of the hilar lymph nodes is to filter lymph from the lungs. This lymphatic fluid carries waste products, bacteria, and other potentially harmful substances away from the lung tissue. The lymph nodes contain white blood cells that help to destroy these substances and prevent infection.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Enlargement of the hilar lymph nodes, known as hilar lymphadenopathy, can be a sign of various medical conditions, including lung cancer, sarcoidosis, and tuberculosis. It can be detected through imaging studies such as a chest X-ray or computed tomography (CT) scan.
