Hook Norton Brewery

Hook Norton Brewery is a regional brewery located in the village of Hook Norton, Oxfordshire, England. Established in 1849, it is one of the few remaining family-owned breweries in the United Kingdom. The brewery is known for its traditional brewing methods and a range of cask ales.

History[edit | edit source]

The brewery was founded by John Harris in 1849. The Harris family has maintained ownership through successive generations, ensuring the preservation of traditional brewing techniques. The brewery building itself is a five-storey Victorian tower brewery, which is a rare example of a working tower brewery in the UK.

Brewing Process[edit | edit source]

Hook Norton Brewery uses a combination of traditional and modern brewing techniques. The brewery still employs a steam engine, which was installed in 1899, to power some of the brewing processes. The brewing water is sourced from a spring located on the brewery site, and the brewery uses locally grown barley and hops.

Beers[edit | edit source]

Hook Norton Brewery produces a variety of beers, including:

  • Hooky - A classic session bitter with a balance of malt and hops.
  • Old Hooky - A premium ale with a rich, fruity flavor.
  • Double Stout - A dark, full-bodied stout with roasted malt flavors.
  • Twelve Days - A strong, dark ale brewed for the Christmas season.

Brewery Tours[edit | edit source]

The brewery offers guided tours that provide insights into the brewing process and the history of the brewery. Visitors can see the steam engine in action, explore the Victorian tower, and sample the beers in the brewery's tasting room.

Hook Norton Brewery Museum[edit | edit source]

The brewery also houses a museum that showcases the history of brewing in Hook Norton and the development of the brewery over the years. The museum features a collection of brewing artifacts, historical documents, and photographs.
