Horace is a renowned Roman poet, best known for his works Odes and Epistles. He was born in 65 BC in the town of Venusia, in the Apulia region of Italy. His father was a freed slave who made sure Horace received a quality education in Rome and Athens, where he studied philosophy.

Early Life[edit | edit source]

Horace was born as Quintus Horatius Flaccus in Venusia. His father, a former slave, worked as a tax collector. Despite his humble origins, Horace's father ensured that his son received a good education, first in Rome and then in Athens, where he studied philosophy.

Career[edit | edit source]

Horace began his career as a treasury official in the Roman government. However, he soon turned to writing and became one of the leading poets of his time. His works, including the Odes and Epistles, are considered classics of Latin literature. Horace's poetry was known for its wit, wisdom, and mastery of form.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Horace's influence on Western literature has been profound. His works have been studied and admired by generations of writers and scholars. His philosophy of Carpe Diem (seize the day) has become a common theme in Western culture.
