Hrvoje Ćustić (21 February 1983 – 3 April 2008) was a Croatian football player whose career was tragically cut short following an on-field accident. Ćustić played as a midfielder for NK Zadar, a club competing in the Croatian First Football League, the top tier of Croatian football. His untimely death raised significant concerns about player safety in football, leading to increased scrutiny and improvements in medical and safety standards within the sport.

Born in Zadar, Croatia, Hrvoje Ćustić showed an early passion for football. He joined the youth academy of his hometown club, NK Zadar, where he developed his skills and emerged as a promising talent. Ćustić made his professional debut for NK Zadar in the early 2000s, quickly establishing himself as a key player for the team. His performances in the midfield were characterized by his physicality, technical ability, and work rate, making him a fan favorite and a respected figure among his teammates.

On 29 March 2008, during a match against HNK Cibalia at the Stanovi Stadium in Zadar, Ćustić collided with a concrete wall that was dangerously close to the pitch, suffering severe head injuries. The incident occurred as he was attempting to play the ball near the sideline. Despite being rushed to the hospital and undergoing emergency surgery, Ćustić succumbed to his injuries on 3 April 2008, at the age of 25.

The proximity of the wall to the pitch was immediately criticized by the football community, players, and safety experts, highlighting the inadequate safety measures at some football grounds. Ćustić's death led to a nationwide debate in Croatia about the safety standards of football stadiums, with calls for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies.

Hrvoje Ćustić's death had a profound impact on Croatian football. It served as a wake-up call for football authorities, clubs, and stadium operators to review and improve safety measures at football venues.
