Humor is a complex psychological phenomenon which is an essential part of human interaction. It is a form of communication in humans, having positive emotional effects on the listeners and readers. It is associated with laughter and amusement, and many theories exist regarding humor's function and effects on the body.

Definition[edit | edit source]

Humor is often defined as an aspect of behavior, communication, and attitude intended to make people laugh or feel happy. The term derives from the humoral medicine of the ancient Greeks, which stated that a mix of fluids known as humors controlled human health and emotion.

Types of Humor[edit | edit source]

There are several types of humor, including but not limited to:

  • Satire - This type of humor uses irony, ridicule, or exaggeration to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.
  • Sarcasm - It is a sharp, bitter, or cutting expression or remark; a bitter gibe or taunt.
  • Self-deprecating humor - This type of humor is when people make jokes about themselves, their shortcomings, or their culture, usually in a light-hearted and humorous way.

Humor has been shown to have several positive effects on various aspects of life. It can boost our mood, increase connectivity with others, and has been linked to improved mental and physical health.
