Hunt's

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Hunt's is an American brand of preserved tomato products owned by Conagra Brands. The company was founded in 1888, in Sebastopol, California, as the Hunt Bros. Fruit Packing Co. by Joseph and William Hunt. The brothers relocated to nearby Santa Rosa in 1890, and then to Hayward in 1895. This small canning operation grew rapidly, focused on canning the products of California's booming fruit and vegetable industries. By 1941, the plant shipped a million cans of soup, fruits, vegetables, and juices daily.

History[edit | edit source]

Joseph Hunt and William Hunt founded Hunt's in 1888. The company was originally a small canning operation, specializing in canned tomato products. In 1943, Hunt's was taken over by Val Vita Food Products - a competing firm founded in 1933 by Norton Simon and three business partners. In 1948, Val Vita merged with Hunt's Foods, Inc. to become Hunt Food and Industries, Inc.

The company changed hands several times in the 20th century and was bought by Conagra Brands in 1990. Today, Hunt's is known for its canned tomato products, including sauce, paste, diced, whole, stewed, puree, and crushed tomatoes, and other specialty tomato products.

Products[edit | edit source]

Hunt's is best known for its canned tomato products, which are made using a proprietary process called "FlashSteam". Instead of using lye to peel the tomatoes, Hunt's peels them using steam. This process is believed to give the tomatoes a fresh, vine-ripened flavor.

In addition to its tomato products, Hunt's also produces a wide range of other food products, including BBQ sauce, ketchup, pasta sauce, and canned beans.

In Popular Culture[edit | edit source]

Hunt's has been mentioned in various forms of media and has been a staple in American kitchens for decades. The brand's products have been featured in numerous recipes and cooking shows.
