Hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) are a type of chemical compound that are used as refrigerants. They are a subset of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), but unlike HFCs, they have an olefinic double bond, which makes them more reactive and thus less persistent in the atmosphere.

HFOs were developed as a response to the environmental impact of traditional HFCs. The Montreal Protocol of 1987 and its subsequent amendments have led to the phase-out of many ozone-depleting substances, including chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). HFCs were initially introduced as replacements for these substances, but they have a high global warming potential (GWP), which has led to the development of HFOs as a more environmentally friendly alternative.

Properties[edit | edit source]

HFOs have several properties that make them suitable for use as refrigerants. They have a low GWP, typically less than 1, compared to HFCs, which can have a GWP of over 1,000. They also have a short atmospheric lifetime, typically less than a few days, due to their olefinic double bond, which makes them more reactive and thus less persistent in the atmosphere.

However, HFOs also have some drawbacks. They are more flammable than HFCs, which can pose safety risks. They also decompose into trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) in the atmosphere, which can have harmful effects on the environment.

Uses[edit | edit source]

HFOs are primarily used as refrigerants in air conditioning and refrigeration systems. They are also used in aerosols, foam blowing, and as solvents.

Environmental Impact[edit | edit source]

The environmental impact of HFOs is significantly lower than that of traditional HFCs. Their low GWP and short atmospheric lifetime mean that they contribute less to global warming. However, their decomposition into TFA in the atmosphere can have harmful effects on the environment, and their flammability can pose safety risks.
