iPhone X is a smartphone designed, developed, and marketed by Apple Inc. It was announced on September 12, 2017, alongside the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park campus. The iPhone X was released on November 3, 2017, and marks the 10th anniversary of the iPhone line, hence the 'X' in the name, which is the Roman numeral for ten.

Design[edit | edit source]

The iPhone X introduced a new design compared to previous models. It features a 5.8-inch OLED screen, which Apple calls the Super Retina Display, with a resolution of 1125 x 2436 pixels. The display adopts a nearly bezel-less front with a notch at the top to accommodate the front camera, speaker, and sensors. The body is made of surgical-grade stainless steel and glass, allowing for wireless charging. It was available in two colors: Space Gray and Silver.

Specifications[edit | edit source]

Hardware[edit | edit source]

The device is powered by the A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture, M11 motion coprocessor, and a neural engine for enhanced machine learning capabilities. It has 3GB of RAM and was available in two storage capacities: 64GB and 256GB. The iPhone X also introduced Face ID, a facial recognition system that replaced the traditional Touch ID fingerprint system found in earlier models. The rear camera system features a dual 12MP setup with optical image stabilization, while the front camera is a 7MP TrueDepth camera capable of capturing Portrait Mode selfies.

Software[edit | edit source]

The iPhone X originally shipped with iOS 11, bringing significant updates including a redesigned control center, improved Siri functionality, and augmented reality technologies. Over its lifespan, it has received multiple iOS updates, enhancing its performance and security.

Reception[edit | edit source]

The iPhone X received generally positive reviews from critics and users alike, particularly for its display, design, and camera capabilities. However, its high price and the removal of the Touch ID were seen as controversial points. The introduction of Face ID was praised for its innovation but also raised concerns regarding privacy and security.

Impact[edit | edit source]

The iPhone X set the standard for future iPhone designs, moving away from the home button and embracing full-screen displays and facial recognition technology. It played a significant role in pushing the industry towards bezel-less smartphone designs and the adoption of OLED technology.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Although it was succeeded by the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR in 2018, the iPhone X remains a significant model in the iPhone lineup for its design and technological advancements. It marked a major shift in Apple's design philosophy and influenced the development of future mobile technologies.
