IPhone XR
iPhone XR is a smartphone designed and manufactured by Apple Inc. It was announced on September 12, 2018, alongside the higher-priced iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max at the Steve Jobs Theater in the Apple Park campus. The iPhone XR serves as a more affordable alternative to the XS models, retaining many of the same features but with some compromises. It was released on October 26, 2018.
Design[edit | edit source]
The iPhone XR features an aerospace-grade aluminum frame, differing from the stainless steel frame of the XS and XS Max. It is available in six finishes: black, white, blue, yellow, coral, and (PRODUCT)RED. The device is fronted by a 6.1-inch "Liquid Retina" LCD display, which is larger than the iPhone 8 Plus but smaller than the iPhone XS Max. The XR is IP67 dust and water-resistant, allowing it to be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes.
Hardware[edit | edit source]
The iPhone XR is powered by the same A12 Bionic chip found in the iPhone XS and XS Max, featuring a next-generation Neural Engine capable of performing up to 5 trillion operations per second. It has a single 12-megapixel rear camera, which supports Smart HDR, Portrait Mode, and Portrait Lighting, but lacks the telephoto lens of the XS and XS Max. The front camera is a 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera, enabling Face ID and Animoji.
Software[edit | edit source]
The device originally shipped with iOS 12, which introduced Screen Time, Group FaceTime, and Memoji. The iPhone XR supports subsequent iOS updates, providing access to the latest features and security enhancements.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The iPhone XR received generally positive reviews, with critics praising its performance, battery life, and the quality of the Liquid Retina display. However, some criticized the lower resolution of the display compared to other flagship smartphones and the lack of a dual-camera system. Despite these criticisms, the iPhone XR was well-received by consumers and became the best-selling smartphone globally in 2019.
Sales[edit | edit source]
The iPhone XR's lower price point compared to the iPhone XS and XS Max contributed to its strong sales performance. It was reported to have outsold both the XS and XS Max in the months following its release. The device's wide range of colors and large screen size, combined with a relatively affordable price, made it a popular choice among consumers.
Conclusion[edit | edit source]
The iPhone XR represents Apple's effort to offer a more accessible iPhone without significantly compromising on performance, camera quality, or build. It stands as a testament to Apple's strategy of diversifying its iPhone lineup to cater to a broader range of consumers.
