FDI World Dental Federation notation

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

(Redirected from ISO 3950)

FDI World Dental Federation notation is a universally accepted system for numbering teeth, developed by the FDI World Dental Federation. It is also known as the ISO system, named after the International Organization for Standardization which endorsed it.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "FDI" stands for "Fédération Dentaire Internationale", which is French for "International Dental Federation". The FDI World Dental Federation is an organization that represents more than one million dentists worldwide. Its main role is to promote oral health and issues related to dentistry.

Description[edit | edit source]

The FDI World Dental Federation notation is a two-digit system that is used to identify the teeth. The first digit represents the quadrant, and the second digit represents the tooth within that quadrant. The quadrants are numbered as follows:

  • 1: Upper right
  • 2: Upper left
  • 3: Lower left
  • 4: Lower right

The teeth within each quadrant are numbered from 1 to 8, starting from the middle and moving outwards. For example, the upper right central incisor is denoted as 11, while the lower left second molar is denoted as 37.
