The Ilkhanate was a Mongol khanate established in the 13th century, which formed the southwestern sector of the Mongol Empire. It was founded by Hulagu Khan, a grandson of Genghis Khan, and it encompassed much of present-day Iran, Iraq, Turkey, and parts of Syria and Afghanistan.

The Ilkhanate was established in 1256, following Hulagu Khan's successful campaigns in the region. One of the most significant events during the early period of the Ilkhanate was the Siege of Baghdad in 1258, which led to the destruction of the Abbasid Caliphate. The Ilkhanate was governed by a series of khans who were often in conflict with other Mongol khanates, such as the Golden Horde and the Chagatai Khanate. The decline of the Ilkhanate began in the mid-14th century due to internal strife, economic difficulties, and the Black Death. The last Ilkhan, Abu Sa'id Bahadur Khan, died in 1335 without an heir, leading to the fragmentation of the Ilkhanate into several smaller states.
