Imaging informatics
Imaging informatics, also known as radiology informatics or medical imaging informatics, is a subspecialty of biomedical informatics that aims to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and utilization of imaging services within healthcare.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Imaging informatics is the study of methods, algorithms, and software systems that are used in the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of image data in healthcare. This includes the use of information technology systems to manage and distribute medical images and related information.
History[edit | edit source]
The field of imaging informatics has its roots in the early days of computerized medical imaging, when radiologists began to use computers to store and retrieve images. The field has since evolved to encompass a wide range of technologies and applications, including Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Radiology Information Systems (RIS), and Electronic Health Records (EHRs).
Applications[edit | edit source]
Imaging informatics is used in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and research institutions. It is used to manage and analyze medical images, to facilitate communication between healthcare providers, and to improve patient care.
