Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC), New Zealand

The Immunisation Advisory Centre (IMAC) is a New Zealand-based national center of excellence focused on providing immunisation and vaccine-preventable disease information and education for health professionals and the public. Established with the goal of increasing immunisation rates in New Zealand, IMAC operates under the auspices of the University of Auckland and is funded by the Ministry of Health.

Overview[edit | edit source]

IMAC's mission is to promote and support effective immunisation practice through the provision of evidence-based information, education, and training programs. The centre plays a crucial role in advising healthcare professionals, policy makers, and the community on immunisation issues, vaccine safety, and the management of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Services[edit | edit source]

IMAC offers a wide range of services, including:

  • Professional development and training for health professionals on immunisation practice and vaccine-preventable diseases.
  • A national immunisation helpline providing support and advice to health professionals and the public.
  • Development and dissemination of educational materials and resources on immunisation.
  • Research and policy advice on immunisation-related issues.

Key Initiatives[edit | edit source]

One of IMAC's key initiatives is the National Immunisation Programme, which aims to increase immunisation coverage among New Zealand children. This programme includes the National Immunisation Schedule, a series of free vaccinations offered to children and adults to protect against various diseases.

IMAC also plays a significant role in the Influenza vaccination campaign, promoting the annual flu vaccine to reduce the incidence and impact of influenza in the community.

Challenges and Achievements[edit | edit source]

Despite the success in improving immunisation rates in New Zealand, IMAC faces ongoing challenges such as vaccine hesitancy and misinformation. The centre actively works to address these issues through public education campaigns and by providing accurate, up-to-date information on vaccines.

IMAC's efforts have contributed significantly to the increase in immunisation coverage in New Zealand, leading to a reduction in the incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases.
