Inch

Inch is a unit of length in the Imperial system and the United States customary units. It is equal to 1/12th of a foot, or exactly 2.54 centimeters.

The inch has been used as a standard unit of measure for lengths and distances since at least the 7th century. The word "inch" comes from the Latin word uncia, which was a unit of length in the Roman measurement system. The inch was originally defined as the width of a man's thumb at the base, a definition that was later refined to the length of three barleycorns.

Usage[edit | edit source]

Today, the inch is commonly used in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. It is used in everyday measurements, as well as in industries such as manufacturing and construction. In the United States, the inch is also used in the printing and photography industries to measure image size.

Conversion[edit | edit source]

One inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters, 25.4 millimeters, or 0.0254 meters in the Metric system. Conversely, one meter is approximately equal to 39.37 inches.
