The foot (plural: feet) is a unit of length in the imperial and US customary systems of measurement. It is subdivided into 12 inches.
History[edit | edit source]
The foot has been used since antiquity, with the earliest known reference dating back to the Ancient Egyptian "Royal Cubit". The foot was a standard unit of measure in many cultures, including the Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and English.
Use in modern times[edit | edit source]
Today, the foot is commonly used in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, although it has been largely replaced by the metre in most other countries. It is used in aviation, such as for the height of flight levels and the length of runways, in the construction industry, and in mapping and surveying.
Conversion to other units[edit | edit source]
One foot is equal to 0.3048 metres, 12 inches, or approximately 0.3333 yards.
