Life extension
(Redirected from Indefinite lifespan)
Life extension is the study of slowing down or reversing the processes of aging to extend both the maximum and average lifespan. The ability to achieve this, however, does not currently exist. Some researchers in this area, and "life extensionists", "immortalists" or "longevists" (those who wish to achieve longer lives themselves), believe that future breakthroughs in tissue rejuvenation with stem cells, molecular repair, and organ replacement (such as with artificial organs or xenotransplantation) will eventually enable humans to have indefinite lifespans through complete rejuvenation to a youthful condition.
Theories of Aging[edit | edit source]
There are many theories of aging that have been proposed. For example, some theories suggest that aging is a result of accumulated damage to cells and tissues, while others suggest that aging is a result of programmed processes. One theory is that aging is caused by damage to the DNA and other genetic material in our cells.
Life Extension Methods[edit | edit source]
There are several proposed methods for life extension, including diet and lifestyle changes, drugs and supplements, and medical procedures. Some of these methods have been shown to increase lifespan in animal models, but their effects on human lifespan are still uncertain.
Diet and Lifestyle[edit | edit source]
A healthy diet and lifestyle are often recommended for life extension. This can include a balanced diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Some research suggests that certain diets, like the Mediterranean diet, can increase lifespan.
Drugs and Supplements[edit | edit source]
There are also many drugs and supplements that are proposed for life extension. For example, resveratrol is a compound found in red wine that has been shown to extend lifespan in yeast and worms. However, its effects on human lifespan are still uncertain.
Medical Procedures[edit | edit source]
Medical procedures, like organ transplants and stem cell therapy, are also proposed for life extension. These procedures can potentially replace or repair damaged tissues and organs, which could extend lifespan.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
Life extension has been criticized for a variety of reasons. Some critics argue that it is unnatural or that it would lead to overpopulation. Others argue that the resources used for life extension could be better used to address current health issues.
