Independence State Hospital

Independence State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located in Independence, Iowa. It was established in 1873 and is one of the oldest state-run mental health facilities in Iowa. The hospital provides a range of mental health services, including inpatient care, outpatient care, and community-based services.

The Independence State Hospital was established in 1873, following the passing of a bill by the Iowa General Assembly. The hospital was designed by architect William Foster and was built on a 160-acre site. The hospital was initially designed to accommodate 600 patients, but by the 1890s, it was serving over 1,000 patients.
