Industry

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Industry is a sector of the economy that is involved in the production of goods or the provision of services. It is often classified into three sectors: primary (extraction of raw materials), secondary (manufacturing), and tertiary (services).

Primary Industry[edit | edit source]

The primary industry involves the extraction and harvesting of natural products from the earth, such as agriculture, mining, forestry, and fishing. These industries are most prevalent in developing countries, where they can form a large part of the economy.

Secondary Industry[edit | edit source]

The secondary industry involves the manufacturing of goods. This can include the production of raw materials into products, such as turning timber into furniture, or the construction of infrastructure, such as roads and buildings. Secondary industries are often associated with industrialization and the development of economies.

Tertiary Industry[edit | edit source]

The tertiary industry involves the provision of services to consumers and businesses. This can include retail, hospitality, finance, and health care. Tertiary industries are often the largest sector of the economy in developed countries.

Quaternary and Quinary Industries[edit | edit source]

In addition to the three traditional sectors, some economists also identify a quaternary industry and a quinary industry. The quaternary industry involves the processing of information and the provision of information services, such as computing and ICT. The quinary industry involves the provision of decision-making services in large organizations.

Impact of Industry on Society and the Environment[edit | edit source]

Industry has a significant impact on society and the environment. It can create jobs and wealth, but it can also lead to social and environmental problems. For example, industrial pollution can harm the environment, and industrial jobs can sometimes be dangerous or exploitative.
