IndyCar Series

IndyCar Series is the premier level of open-wheel racing in North America. Its parent company began in 1996 as a competitor to CART known as the Indy Racing League (IRL) which was created by then Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George. In 2008, the IndyCar Series merged with the Champ Car World Series (formerly CART). The series is self-sanctioned by IndyCar.

The IndyCar Series, known originally as the Indy Racing League (IRL), was formed in 1994 by Tony George, who was the president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The series began competition in 1996 and was initially intended to serve as an exclusively oval racing series, with the centerpiece of the series being the Indianapolis 500.

Races[edit | edit source]

The IndyCar Series schedule consists of a variety of tracks, including superspeedways, short ovals, road courses, and street circuits. The most prestigious event in the series is the Indianapolis 500. Other notable races include the Grand Prix of Long Beach, IndyCar Grand Prix, and the Indy 500.

Cars[edit | edit source]

The cars used in the IndyCar Series are a type of formula racing car, known as the Dallara IR-12. This car has been the standard chassis since 2012. The engines used in IndyCar Series are 2.2L V6, twin-turbocharged engines, produced by Honda and Chevrolet.

Drivers and teams[edit | edit source]

Many famous drivers have competed in the IndyCar Series, including Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves, and Danica Patrick. The series also features many well-known teams, such as Team Penske, Andretti Autosport, and Chip Ganassi Racing.

Championships[edit | edit source]

The IndyCar Series championship is determined by a points system, with points being awarded based on finishing position in each race. The driver with the most points at the end of the season is declared the champion. The current champion is Scott Dixon.
