Information Technology

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Information Technology (IT) is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit, and manipulate data or information. IT is typically used within the context of business operations as opposed to personal or entertainment technologies. IT is considered to be a subset of information and communications technology (ICT).

History[edit | edit source]

The term information technology was coined by the Harvard Business Review, in order to make a distinction between purpose-built machines designed to perform a limited scope of functions, and general-purpose computing machines that could be programmed for various tasks. As the IT industry evolved from the mid-20th century, computing capability advanced while device cost and energy consumption fell lower, a cycle that continues today when new technologies emerge.

Components[edit | edit source]

Information technology can be divided into three components: IT infrastructure, IT services and IT applications:

  • IT infrastructure: This includes hardware, software, and networks used to support the delivery of IT services and products.
  • IT services: These are the processes that make effective use of IT resources. They include IT management and IT operations.
  • IT applications: These are the software systems that help to automate and streamline business processes.

Impact on Healthcare[edit | edit source]

In the healthcare sector, information technology plays a crucial role. It is used for various purposes such as electronic health records, telemedicine, and healthcare information systems. The use of IT in healthcare has improved patient care and increased efficiency in the healthcare industry.
