Institut National d'Études Démographiques (INED) is a French public research institute specialized in demographic studies. Established in 1945, INED is under the dual authority of the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education and Research, and the Ministry of Social Affairs. Its mission is to study population dynamics in France and worldwide, covering aspects such as birth rates, mortality, migration, and family structures. The institute conducts research, provides training in demography, and disseminates demographic knowledge to the public and policymakers.

History[edit | edit source]

The foundation of INED came in the aftermath of World War II, a period marked by significant demographic changes in France and Europe. The institute was created by a decree on October 24, 1945, with the aim of developing demographic research that could inform public policy. Since its inception, INED has been at the forefront of demographic studies, contributing to major demographic theories and methodologies.

Research[edit | edit source]

INED's research activities are organized around several themes:

Researchers at INED employ a wide range of methodologies, from quantitative statistical analysis to qualitative studies, to explore the complexities of population dynamics. The institute also plays a crucial role in collecting and analyzing demographic data, often in collaboration with other national and international research bodies.

Publications and Resources[edit | edit source]

INED publishes a variety of resources aimed at both the scientific community and the general public. These include:

  • Population & Societies - a monthly newsletter summarizing recent demographic research findings.
  • Population - a scientific journal featuring original research articles in French and English.
  • Demographic reports and working papers.
  • An extensive online database providing access to demographic data and research findings.

Training and Education[edit | edit source]

In addition to its research activities, INED is committed to training the next generation of demographers. The institute offers:

  • PhD programs in demography, in partnership with French and international universities.
  • Internships and post-doctoral fellowships for young researchers.
  • Seminars and workshops on demographic research methods and findings.

International Collaboration[edit | edit source]

Recognizing the global nature of demographic issues, INED actively participates in international research projects and networks. The institute collaborates with universities, research centers, and international organizations around the world to advance the understanding of population dynamics and their implications.
