Interdisciplinary
Interdisciplinary refers to the integration of knowledge and methods from different disciplines, using a real synthesis of approaches. It is a process of answering a question, solving a problem, or addressing a topic that is too broad or complex to be dealt with adequately by a single discipline or profession. Interdisciplinary involves researchers, students, and teachers in the goal of connecting and integrating several academic schools of thought, professions, or technologies - along with their specific perspectives - in the pursuit of a common task.
Definition[edit | edit source]
The term interdisciplinary is applied within education and training pedagogies to describe studies that use methods and insights of several established disciplines or traditional fields of study. Interdisciplinarity involves researchers, students, and teachers in the goal of connecting and integrating several academic disciplines or professional specializations in an in-depth study.
Interdisciplinary Fields[edit | edit source]
Interdisciplinary fields introduce new disciplines by combining the content and methods of two or more disciplines. Some examples of interdisciplinary fields include Women's Studies, Bioinformatics, Bioelectronics, Nanotechnology, and Mathematical Physics.
Benefits of Interdisciplinary Approach[edit | edit source]
The interdisciplinary approach allows for the synthesis of ideas and the synthesis of characteristics from many disciplines. At the same time, it addresses students' individual differences and helps to develop important, transferable skills.
Criticism[edit | edit source]
Despite its benefits, some criticism has been aimed at the interdisciplinary approach. Some academics and professionals feel that this approach lacks depth and breadth in its study and practice.
