Interior design

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Interior design is a multi-faceted profession in which creative and technical solutions are applied within a structure to achieve a built interior environment. These solutions are functional, enhance the quality of life and culture of the occupants, and are aesthetically attractive. Designs are created in response to and coordinated with the building shell, and acknowledge the physical location and social context of the project. Designs must adhere to code and regulatory requirements, and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. The interior design process follows a systematic and coordinated methodology, including research, analysis and integration of knowledge into the creative process, whereby the needs and resources of the client are satisfied to produce an interior space that fulfills the project goals.

Elements of Interior Design[edit | edit source]

Interior design is a complex field that combines aspects of architecture, art, and environmental psychology. It involves the design and coordination of all the decorative elements in a house, apartment, office, or other structural space, including color schemes, fittings, furnishings, and fixtures.

Color[edit | edit source]

Color is a powerful design tool in decoration, as well as in interior design, which is the art of composing and coordinating colors together to create a stylish scheme on the interior architecture of the space.

Space[edit | edit source]

Space is one of the most important parts in interior design. Space acts as a foundation on which the entire interior design plan is built. Hence it is essential that the designer is well aware of the space available, its dimensions and its utilities.

Light[edit | edit source]

Light is one of the most obvious elements of interior design. Either natural or artificial, without light other elements namely color, texture and pattern have no significance at all.

Pattern[edit | edit source]

Patterns add interest and life to interior design and work along with colors. Patterns tell a story of their own and add the elements of continuity and smooth transition in a living space.
