Interleukin 30

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Interleukin 30 (IL-30) is a cytokine that is part of the Interleukin 6 (IL-6) family. It is a protein that plays a crucial role in the immune response of the body. IL-30 is produced by T cells, a type of white blood cell, and is involved in the regulation of the immune system and inflammation.

Function[edit | edit source]

IL-30 is a cytokine, a type of protein that is involved in cell signaling. It is produced by T cells in response to an immune stimulus. IL-30 plays a crucial role in the immune response by promoting the differentiation of T cells into Th17 cells, a subset of T cells that are involved in the immune response to infections and in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases.

IL-30 also has anti-inflammatory properties. It can inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as Interleukin 1 (IL-1) and Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), by macrophages, a type of white blood cell that is involved in the immune response.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Due to its role in the immune response and inflammation, IL-30 has been implicated in a number of diseases, including autoimmune diseases, cancer, and infectious diseases.

In autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own cells. IL-30 has been found to be elevated in patients with these diseases, suggesting that it may play a role in their pathogenesis.

In cancer, IL-30 has been found to promote the growth and survival of cancer cells. It has also been found to promote the migration and invasion of cancer cells, suggesting that it may play a role in cancer metastasis.

In infectious diseases, IL-30 has been found to play a role in the immune response to infections. It has been found to be elevated in patients with bacterial and viral infections, suggesting that it may play a role in the immune response to these infections.
