The International Banana Museum was established in 1976 by Ken Bannister, a banana enthusiast who began collecting banana-related items in the 1960s. In 2010, the museum was purchased by Fred Garbutt, who expanded the collection and moved the museum to its current location in Mecca, California.

The museum's collection includes over 20,000 banana-related items, ranging from banana-themed clothing and jewelry to banana-shaped furniture and musical instruments.
