Intervention (TV series)
Intervention is an American documentary television series that premiered on A&E on March 6, 2005. The series follows one or two participants who are dependent on or addicted to drugs and/or alcohol. It is notable for its format, which includes a surprise intervention staged by the family and friends of the addict, and conducted by a professional interventionist.
Format[edit | edit source]
Each episode of Intervention follows a similar format. The first part of the episode introduces the addict and their family, providing background on the addict's life and the progression of their addiction. The show then documents the addict's daily life, often highlighting the negative impact of their addiction on themselves and their loved ones.
The second part of the episode focuses on the intervention itself. The addict is brought to a location under false pretenses, where they are confronted by their family and friends. A professional interventionist, such as Jeff VanVonderen or Candy Finnigan, facilitates the intervention. The addict is given an ultimatum: accept the offer of treatment or face consequences, such as being cut off from family support.
Production[edit | edit source]
Intervention is produced by GRB Entertainment. The show has been praised for its raw and honest portrayal of addiction, but it has also faced criticism for potentially exploiting vulnerable individuals for entertainment purposes.
Reception[edit | edit source]
The series has received critical acclaim and has won several awards, including a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Program in 2009. It has also been credited with helping to raise awareness about addiction and the importance of intervention and treatment.
Spin-offs and International Versions[edit | edit source]
Intervention has inspired several spin-offs and international versions, including Intervention Canada and Intervention Australia. These versions follow a similar format to the original series but focus on addicts in their respective countries.
