Intramural

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Intramural refers to something occurring or situated within the walls of a body organ or structure, such as an intramural fibroid in the uterus or an intramural hematoma in the aorta.

Definition[edit | edit source]

The term "intramural" is derived from Latin, where "intra" means "within" and "murus" means "wall". In medical terminology, it is used to describe something located or occurring within the wall of an organ or structure in the body.

Intramural in Different Medical Contexts[edit | edit source]

Intramural can refer to different conditions depending on the organ or structure involved. Some examples include:

  • Intramural fibroid: A type of fibroid that grows within the muscular wall of the uterus. It can cause symptoms such as heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and fertility problems.
  • Intramural hematoma: A condition where blood collects within the wall of a blood vessel, often the aorta. It can be caused by trauma or aortic dissection, and can lead to life-threatening complications if not treated promptly.
  • Intramural pregnancy: A rare type of ectopic pregnancy where the fertilized egg implants within the muscular wall of the uterus. It can cause severe abdominal pain and bleeding, and requires immediate medical attention.
