Ismail Abdul Rahman (4to3)

Ismail Abdul Rahman (4 November 1915 – 2 August 1973) was a prominent Malaysian politician and physician. He served as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1970 until his death in 1973. He was also a key figure in the formation of Malaysia and played a significant role in the country's early development.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Ismail was born in Johor Bahru, Johor, British Malaya. He received his early education at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) and later pursued his medical studies at the King Edward VII College of Medicine in Singapore. He furthered his studies in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a degree in medicine from the University of Melbourne.

Medical Career[edit | edit source]

Upon returning to Malaya, Ismail worked as a physician and was actively involved in the medical community. He was known for his dedication to improving healthcare services in the country and was instrumental in establishing several medical institutions.

Political Career[edit | edit source]

Ismail's political career began when he joined the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He quickly rose through the ranks and became a key member of the party. In 1954, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Johor Bahru. He held various ministerial positions, including Minister of Health and Minister of Home Affairs.

Deputy Prime Minister[edit | edit source]

In 1970, Ismail was appointed as the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia by Prime Minister Abdul Razak Hussein. During his tenure, he was involved in several important initiatives, including the implementation of the New Economic Policy (NEP), which aimed to reduce poverty and restructure the Malaysian economy to eliminate the identification of race with economic function.

Ismail was married to Tunku Kurshiah and had several children. He was known for his modest lifestyle and dedication to public service. His contributions to the nation were widely recognized, and he was posthumously awarded several honors.

Death and Legacy[edit | edit source]

Ismail Abdul Rahman passed away on 2 August 1973. His death was a significant loss to the nation, and he is remembered as a key figure in Malaysia's history. Several institutions and landmarks have been named in his honor, including the Ismail Abdul Rahman Building in Kuala Lumpur.
