Jerome Irving Rodale (August 16, 1898 – June 8, 1971) was a pioneering figure in the American organic farming and organic gardening movements. He founded the Rodale Institute, an organization dedicated to promoting organic agriculture, and was the publisher of several influential magazines, including Organic Farming and Gardening and Prevention.

J. I. Rodale was born in New York City to a family of Jewish immigrants from Poland. He initially pursued a career in electrical engineering and later became a successful businessman in the manufacturing industry. However, his interest in health and wellness led him to explore organic farming practices.

Contributions to Organic Farming[edit | edit source]

Rodale is best known for his advocacy of organic farming, a method of agriculture that avoids the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. In 1942, he founded Organic Farming and Gardening magazine, which became a leading publication in the organic movement. Through his writings and public appearances, Rodale promoted the benefits of organic farming for human health and the environment.

In 1947, Rodale established the Rodale Institute in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The institute conducts research on organic farming methods and provides education and training for farmers. It has played a significant role in advancing the science and practice of organic agriculture.

Rodale was a prolific writer and publisher. In addition to Organic Farming and Gardening, he launched Prevention magazine in 1950, which focused on health and wellness topics. J. I. Rodale died on June 8, 1971, while appearing as a guest on The Dick Cavett Show. He suffered a heart attack during the taping of the show and was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

Rodale's work laid the foundation for the modern organic movement in the United States. His advocacy for sustainable farming practices and healthy living continues to influence the fields of agriculture and wellness.
