James MacDonnell (physician)
James MacDonnell (1763–1845) was an Irish physician and a prominent figure in the medical and cultural life of Belfast during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He is best known for his contributions to the establishment of medical institutions and his involvement in the cultural and intellectual development of Belfast.

James MacDonnell was born in 1763 in Belfast, Ireland. He pursued his medical education at the University of Edinburgh, one of the leading medical schools of the time. After completing his studies, he returned to Belfast to practice medicine.

MacDonnell was a pioneering figure in the medical community of Belfast. He was instrumental in the founding of the Belfast General Hospital in 1792, which later became the Royal Victoria Hospital. His efforts significantly improved the healthcare infrastructure in the region.
In addition to his work at the hospital, MacDonnell was a founding member of the Belfast Medical Society, established in 1806. The society played a crucial role in advancing medical knowledge and practice in Belfast and beyond.
