James P. Buchanan
James Paul Buchanan (April 30, 1867 – February 22, 1937) was an American politician who served as a U.S. Representative from Texas's 10th congressional district. He was a member of the Democratic Party.
Early life and education[edit | edit source]
Buchanan was born in Midway, Texas, and attended the local schools. He later attended the University of Texas School of Law, where he earned his law degree.
Career[edit | edit source]
After completing his education, Buchanan began practicing law in Brenham, Texas. He quickly became involved in local politics and was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1900. He served in the state legislature until 1906.
In 1913, Buchanan was elected to the United States House of Representatives, representing Texas's 10th congressional district. He served in this capacity until his death in 1937. During his tenure, he was known for his work on the House Appropriations Committee, where he played a significant role in shaping federal spending policies.
Death and legacy[edit | edit source]
James P. Buchanan died on February 22, 1937, in Washington, D.C., while still in office. He was succeeded by W. R. Poage. Buchanan's contributions to his district and his work on the Appropriations Committee left a lasting impact on federal fiscal policies.
