James S. Jeffrey
American diplomat
James Franklin Jeffrey (born February 8, 1946) is a retired American diplomat and expert in Middle Eastern, European, and strategic security issues. He has served in various high-profile diplomatic roles, including as the United States Ambassador to Iraq and Turkey, and as the Deputy National Security Advisor.
Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
James Franklin Jeffrey was born on February 8, 1946, in Saugus, Massachusetts. He attended Northeastern University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He later pursued a Master of Arts in Business Administration from Boston University. Jeffrey also studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Center for International Studies.

Jeffrey began his career in the United States Army as an infantry officer from 1969 to 1976. Following his military service, he joined the United States Foreign Service in 1977. His early assignments included postings in Ankara, Turkey, and Munich, Germany.
Ambassador to Albania[edit | edit source]
In 2002, Jeffrey was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Albania. During his tenure, he focused on strengthening bilateral relations and supporting Albania's aspirations to join NATO.
Ambassador to Turkey[edit | edit source]
From 2008 to 2010, Jeffrey served as the United States Ambassador to Turkey. His tenure was marked by efforts to enhance U.S.-Turkey relations, particularly in the context of regional security and economic cooperation.
Ambassador to Iraq[edit | edit source]
Jeffrey was appointed as the United States Ambassador to Iraq from 2010 to 2012. During this period, he played a crucial role in overseeing the transition of U.S. military operations to a civilian-led mission following the withdrawal of combat troops.
