Janie Terrero
Janie Terrero was a notable figure in the early 20th century, recognized for her contributions to the suffragette movement in the United Kingdom. She was an active member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), an organization dedicated to securing women's suffrage through militant means.
Early Life[edit | edit source]
Janie Terrero was born in London, England. Details about her early life, including her birth date and family background, remain sparse. However, it is known that she became involved in the suffragette movement in the early 1900s.
Suffragette Activities[edit | edit source]
Terrero joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903. The WSPU was known for its militant tactics, which included protests, hunger strikes, and acts of civil disobedience. Terrero was deeply committed to the cause and participated in several high-profile demonstrations.
Imprisonment and Hunger Strikes[edit | edit source]
Janie Terrero was arrested multiple times for her involvement in suffragette activities. Like many of her fellow suffragettes, she went on hunger strike while imprisoned. The government responded with the controversial practice of force-feeding, which was both physically and mentally traumatic for the women involved.
Legacy[edit | edit source]
Janie Terrero's dedication to the suffragette movement contributed to the eventual success of the campaign for women's voting rights in the United Kingdom. The Representation of the People Act 1918 granted voting rights to women over the age of 30 who met minimum property requirements, and the Representation of the People (Equal Franchise) Act 1928 extended the vote to all women over the age of 21, on equal terms with men.
