Japan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1045
Japan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1045 was a scheduled cargo flight operated by Japan Air Lines (JAL) from Anchorage International Airport in Anchorage, Alaska, to Tokyo Narita International Airport in Tokyo, Japan. The flight was operated using a Douglas DC-8 aircraft.
Accident[edit | edit source]
On January 31, 1974, Japan Air Lines Cargo Flight 1045 crashed shortly after takeoff from Anchorage International Airport. The aircraft was carrying a cargo of various goods, including machinery and consumer products. The crash resulted in the deaths of all five crew members on board.
Aircraft[edit | edit source]
The aircraft involved in the accident was a Douglas DC-8-62AF, a freighter version of the DC-8 series. The DC-8 is a four-engine narrow-body jet airliner built by the Douglas Aircraft Company.
Crew[edit | edit source]
The flight crew consisted of a captain, first officer, flight engineer, and two loadmasters. All crew members were experienced and had undergone extensive training for operating the DC-8 aircraft.
Investigation[edit | edit source]
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) conducted an investigation into the crash. The investigation revealed that the probable cause of the accident was a loss of control due to improper loading of the cargo, which led to a shift in the center of gravity. Contributing factors included inadequate oversight and failure to adhere to proper loading procedures.
Aftermath[edit | edit source]
Following the accident, Japan Air Lines implemented stricter cargo loading procedures and enhanced training for its crew members to prevent similar incidents in the future. The crash of Flight 1045 highlighted the importance of proper cargo handling and weight distribution in aviation safety.
