Jason Johnson (baseball)
Jason Michael Johnson (born October 27, 1973) is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher. Over his 11-year career, he played for several teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tampa Bay Devil Rays, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers, Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Early Life and Career[edit | edit source]
Johnson was born in Santa Barbara, California. He attended Concordia University Irvine where he played college baseball before being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1992 MLB Draft.
Major League Career[edit | edit source]
Johnson made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 6, 1997. He was later traded to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 1998, where he played until 1999.
In 1999, Johnson joined the Baltimore Orioles, where he played until 2003. During his time with the Orioles, he became known for his durability and consistency as a starting pitcher.
In 2004, Johnson signed with the Detroit Tigers. He played two seasons with the Tigers, where he continued to be a reliable starter.
In 2006, Johnson was traded to the Cleveland Indians. Later that year, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox, where he finished the season.
Johnson signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, which marked the end of his MLB career.
Personal Life[edit | edit source]
Johnson is notable for being one of the first MLB players to openly manage diabetes while playing. He used an insulin pump during games, which was a significant step forward in the acceptance and management of the condition in professional sports.

Over his career, Johnson had a win-loss record of 56-100, an earned run average (ERA) of 4.99, and 830 strikeouts.
